Printing Errors With Bartender Software
Hello!
My company has been using Bartender along with two different printers (a TSC and a Zebra) for about a year now. We have always had problems printing and always believed it to be out old TSC printer. Recently, we have noticed that when we use a UPS software to print from either printer to make shipping labels, there is never any problem. I believe there is something wrong with the Bartender set up we have.
We have Bartender loaded on a high powered laptop. We often have to tinker with the computer ( things like turning off the partner monitor and unplugging other items plugged into the USB ports) in order to get it to print. It sometimes takes hours of manipulation to get labels printed.
Can anyone here offer a solution? Any advice is much appreciated.
Thank you,
Maddie

Hi Maddie,
The issues that you're seeing, are they on a different computer completely, separate from the UPS shipping software? Can you clarify a little more on the printing process you take, start to finish? Also, can you list the printer make/models, and also the printer drivers being used?
If you're referring to having to constantly unplug the printer, please do remember that BarTender utilizes what is available in Windows. If there's a printer communication issue in Windows, there's going to be a printer communication issue in BarTender.

We have both printers and both pieces of software hooked up to high powered laptop. We print from the same computer to the same printer with the UPS software to make shipping labels and have never had problems. The printer we are trying to use (the older one) is a TSC TTP 225 printer and the newer one is a Zebra ZP 450.
In most cases, our labels are being generated using a template and an excel spreadsheet. However this problem occurs when we try to print anything not hooked up to any sort of database as well. With our most recent problem we haven't been asking it to print more than 10 labels at a time (and we've tried both printers with no luck).
I will work on looking up what types of drivers we are using. I worked over the phone with one of your customer support people last year to set up the software and the drivers. Where should I go to find this information?

Maddie,
What is the exact problem you are seeing? ie, what should it be doing vs. what is it actually doing?
Do you know if the UPS software prints through a driver or sends direct ZPL?

The exact problem? The printer will not print a label when we request it too. It is a battle of restarting and retrying and clearing the print job to try and get it to print. We finally realized that we only had problems when we went though the bartender software. I'm not sure exactly what is causing it, but I am more than willing to try a bunch of different things to pinpoint it. This is a problem we have to solve.
We use UPS World Ship and we downloaded it form the internet. I apologize I don't know if that means it does or does not have drivers. From the simplicity of the install it seems that it does not, but that is only a guess.

How are your printers connected to your computer? USB, parallel cable, etc? Is it the same on both ends? Or is one side USB, and the other a different connector?
Also, at this point we need to know what drivers are being used. To find this out, do the following:
Win 7, Win 8
- Navigate to the Start Menu
- Click "Devices and Printers"
- Right-click on your printer, select Printer Properties
- A new window will appear, select the "About" tab.
- What does it say here?
Similar in Windows XP
- Start Menu
- Printers and Faxes
- Right-click on your printer and select Properties
- Click the "About" tab, what does it say?
There's a few possibilities.
1) What nRyder was speaking of, if it's sending direct ZPL to the printer, it's utilizing a completely different method of printing than what BarTender is doing, so it can yield different results.
2) Bringing me to a second point, BarTender generates different print code than what's being sent from the UPS software. Meaning, there's potential for different commands being called in the print code from BarTender that would differ from what's being sent from other software.
If it's sitting in the print queue, it sounds like something is happening with the communication from the printer to the computer. This can often be a result of what we call a hybrid cable, or adapter cable. I.E, a cable that connects USB into the computer and connects serial to the printer.

Both printers are plugged into a USB hub. Just to clarify, the printers do not vary in behavior from on another. They both act the same with Bartender (not printing) and with the other software (printing).
I have searched though the printer properties and am unable to find specific information regarding the driver, but both printers do use drivers.
The tasks do sit in the print que and no printing is done. Again, it prints just fine from the other software so I'm thinking the first possibility is the issue. So the next step, how do I fix this?
Thank you

Hello,
What do you mean exactly when you say that you aren't able to find specific information regarding the driver?
Please, note that it's very important to know which driver you are using. We need that you browse to your "Printer Properties" > "About" tab and you will let us know which printer and which version you are using.
Thanks,
