Activation Of A Copy Of Automation Edition
Upon my recommendation, my client purchased a copy of automation edition for "three printers." Today I installed the software on a PC in the client's site and confirmed it's working correctly even after rebooting the PC. Against my expectation, the installation and the activation process was just for BarTender. There was no separate procedure for the license server.
And this evening, I tried to activate a copy of BarTender on my PC with the same product key code but it was denied with a message saying that there was already an activated copy running. My plan was to add my PC as a second instance of BarTender("a second printer") to the license server in my client's site through a remote connection. My understanding is that with automation edition, I can add as many instances of BarTender as I want to but only three out of them are allowed to function at the same time, which is monitored and regulated by the license server. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I will need to do some software development in my office and test-print barcode labels for my client.

With the Automation edition you can install BarTender on as many computers as you wish. What has happened here is that you've probably installed the License Server at the same time as installing the rest of the BarTender Suite. It should be noted that when activating BarTender, if License Server is also found to be installed, then the activation wizard will attempt to activate License Server at the same time. In your case, as License Server was already installed and activated on the first computer, then the activation was denied.
To solve this all you need do is modify your BarTender installation on the second computer removing the License Server component. Once done try activating BarTender again.
On all further BarTender installations, take care not to select the License Server component for installation unless you really wish to install it.

Thanks for your answer. But if I recall correctly, there was no choice of whether to install the license server or not in installing BarTender from a CD.

I just had teh same issue but this was because there was the trial version installed on the computer which installs everything. Once I modified the installation to remove the license server and rebooted the machine I was able to activate the software.

Note that the Trial edition is simply an unactivated BarTender. The software installed is exactly the same. Therefore, the problem for Slickson is that somebody had made a full install of the BarTender Suite, including License Server, and not that it was the Trial edition per se.

Thanks, Ian C, this thread solved my problem. Just to be clear: Do not check License Server at installation.
After installation, run Help->Activation Wizard from the toobar. This is where you enter your 16 character software key.
After that, run Administer -> Licensing Setup from the toolbar and choose the computer where you actually installed License Server.
