Automation edition or higher.  Commander is a feature only supported by Automation edition or higher.  Note that you can install the Automation editions on as many computers as you wish, this is because these editions use printer based licensing rather than computer based licensing.

Printer Licensing: Both "Automation" editions allow unlimited network users. With these editions, licensing is based on the maximum number of printers used by BarTender on the network.

    Thank you!

We haven't decided yet if we will run a single commander instance with tasks for different environments or if we will build out separate VM's for each commander instance.  It is good to know that we will be covered either way.

Are there any best practices for this type of setup?

I suggest you read this newly updated white paper on Commander:

You only need run more than one instance of Commander for either redundancy purposes, or for load balancing if a single computer lacks the basic horsepower needed to cover the printing requirements you put to it.
