Update 2016 R8 to 2016 R9: is it necessary to release the license before the update?

I would like to update Bartender 2016 from R8 to R9 (automation version).
Do I have to release the license before updating?

  Just run the installer on the same PC/server and it will talk you through the process and this way I am fairly certain you do not need to deactivate it first

  Thanks Pete,
  I did the update as you suggested and everything went well.
  The update uninstalled the R8 version and then installed the R9 without requiring reactivation.
