Error Message 3338: When Trying to Open a BarTender Document
Symptom
When trying to open a BarTender document, you may receive the following error message:
Error Message #3338 The temporary file [file path] could not be accessed.
Applicable to
BarTender 2019 and later
Solution
Permissions
1. First, check that your Windows user account has access to this folder by going to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp.
2. Right-click on Properties and then go to the Security tab. Click on your user account and make sure Read, Write, and Modify are checked. If they are not, click Edit to make changes.
3. If your user account already has the correct permissions or you continue to receive the error after making the change, it means that the BarTender document is most likely corrupt. Try opening the corrupt BarTender document onto a new machine and see if it opens successfully:
- If successful, open the file, copy all the objects, and paste it into a new BarTender document.
- If not, check if you have any backups of the BarTender document. If you can open a backup successfully, you can copy all objects to a new label file.
Missing Temp Subfolder
When you go to check your Temp folder, as recommended by the solution above, it's possible that you could find the folder mentioned in the error missing. If this is the case:
- Create a new, empty folder as a subfolder of C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Temp.
- Give the new folder the same name as the folder mentioned in the error. In the example below, it's just "1".
You should be able to open your documents again.
