Windows Updates KB5039212, KB5039211, and KB5039217 Are Causing Certain Labels and Fonts Not to Work
Symptoms
Windows Update numbers KB5039212, KB5039211, and KB5039217 are causing problems where some data is not printing on some labels, some fonts are changing, and some labels are printing blank. The issue also affects a growing list of specific printers.
Environment
BarTender 2019 and later
Solution
BarTender's development team has investigated these symptoms and found that they stem entirely from these Microsoft updates. Microsoft has released a subsequent update that will resolve any issues stemming from the previous updates.
In addition, we are providing a second solution and two workarounds that could work for you if updating is not possible.
Method 1 - Update Windows
As mentioned above, Microsoft has released a subsequent update to alleviate the issues caused by updates KB5039212, KB5039211, and KB5039217. This update is KB5040427 (Windows 10) or KB5040442 (Windows 11).
Windows should install the new update automatically, but if you need to install it manually, see below:
- In Windows 10, go to Settings > Updates and Security > Windows Update. Click Check for updates.
- In Windows 11, go to Settings > Windows Update. Click Check for updates.
Method 2 - Update Your Drivers by Seagull Printer Drivers
Updating your Drivers by Seagull™ to the latest version (2024.2 or later) should also resolve the issue. You can download the installer for your printer family here.
When you're prompted by the installer, choose to update your currently installed drivers.
Workaround 1 - Remove the Update
One solution is to remove the offending update using Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, go to Settings > Updates and Security > Windows Update > View update history to ensure that one of these updates has been installed. Click Uninstall updates at the top of the screen.
- This will open the Control Panel. Select the applicable update from the list and click Uninstall.
- A reboot will be required after the update is finished uninstalling.
Workaround 2 - Recreate the Label
If your problem with these updates manifests within a particular label, you can bypass the issue by recreating the label from scratch.
More specifically, this means that you must recreate the existing label on a brand new BTW file. The original BTW should not be copied outside BarTender Designer (i.e. copy/pasting the file itself). You can, however, copy the contents of the label inside BarTender Designer and paste them onto another open document.
