In BarTender 2019 and later, you have the option of segmenting your license. This is done by utilizing License Partitions in the Administration Console. If you are not familiar with License Partitions or where to locate them, please see this support article: What are License Partitions?

The printer counts for each partition are controlled by the License Partition dialog. Here you can modify the printer counts, reassign printer pools, and even create new License Partitions.

Opening the License Partition Dialog

Depending on whether you are creating or modifying a Partition, follow the appropriate steps below. Regardless of method, the dialog for both will look and function the nearly same.

Creating a new Partition

If you are creating a new Partition, click on the "Create a new partition" button.

Modifying a partition

To modify an existing partition, right click on the Partition and select "Edit the selected partition." You can also click the pencil icon next to the partition to open up the edit dialog.

Here is a breakdown of each section of the License Partition dialog:

All changes to printer counts you have made in the dialog will be in blue numbers. Anything unchanged will be in black numbers.

The colored squares indicate color of the partition. These colors are randomly assigned and cannot be changed.

Assigned Printer pools

If you have any Printer Pools, you can choose them from the dropdown list. You can assign a Printer Pool to more than one License Partition.

You can pair, change, and remove a Printer Pool with a partition at any time. It does not need to be done during setup.

Printer Counts

Here you can assign how many printer licenses (also known as seats) are allotted to this License Partition. Seats can be claimed from the license's unallocated printer count, if available. If you are creating a new Partition, seats can also be claimed from other partitions.

Unallocated printer count

Seats can become unallocated by deleting Partitions or by reducing the count of printer seats in another Partition.

When creating a new partition, by default the Partition claims all unallocated seats, reducing the unallocated printer count to 0.

From other Partitions

This section is available only when creating a new Partition. Here you can take printer seats from other Partitions as well as delete any unwanted Partitions to increase the available printer count for the new Partition.

Working with the Partition dialog

Regardless of if you're creating a new Partition or modifying an existing one, the top of the partitions dialog is the same in both cases and looks like this

Here you can modify or set the assigned printer pool as well as shift printer seats in and out of the unallocated printer count.

Assigned Printer Pool

Here you can change which Printer Pool is paired with this License Partition. Select the name of the Printer Pool from the dropdown list to set or change the assigned Printer Pool. Selecting the blank option at the top will remove the Printer Pool from the License Partition.

Unallocated printer counts

If you wish to return some of the automatically allocated printer counts, simply click on the up arrow in the number box to increase the unallocated printer count. This will remove any allocated printers from the new partition and return them to the unallocated count.

If you wish to use the unallocated printer seats, simply click the down arrow next to the number box to increase the allocated count for your new partition.

Additional options in the new partitions dialog

The new partitions dialog has all the features listed in the section above with some additional options and settings.

Unallocated printer count

By default, the dialog will give the new partition all the unallocated printer seats and not assign any Printer Pool to this partition.

For example, here I have 20 unallocated printer seats with another partition already created. The new partition dialog automatically allocates those unallocated seats to the new Partition.

You can allocate printer seats from the unallocated printer count (when available) or from other partitions or a combination of the two.

Allocating printer counts from other partitions

Allocating seats from other Partitions works much like the unallocated printer counts in that you can give seats to an existing partition or remove them for use in the new partition.

Printer count can be modified using the up and down arrows located in the Allocated Printer Count column

Clicking the up arrow will give more printer seats to the existing partition and take away from the new partition. Clicking down will do the reverse and give the printer seats to the new partition.

An example dialog

Here is an example of drawing printer seats from both the unallocated count and from other partitions to make a new partition:

All three locations show blue numbers indicating a change in printer seat count. For this new partition, I've drawn 10 printer seats from the unallocated count and left 10 unallocated. I've also pulled 10 from the other partition to give the new partition 20 printer seats.
