Scan Bar Code on Work Order to open a File
I am fairly new to Bartender and want to eliminate the time spent looking for a file on the computer.
Currently the employee will type in the part number that the work order is calling out and open up that file.
Is it possible to set up a script or something similar that would allow the employee to scan a bar code on the work order that would automatically open up the file that directly corresponds to that part number on the work order?

Hi Jonathon,
Welcome to the BarTender Community Forum!
I would recommend you take a look through this article on the Command Line Interface. This will allow you to create automatic command prompts to open BarTender to a specific label and prompt it to print. This is, however, only done through Command Prompt. In order to be able to scan a barcode to trigger the prompt to run, it is likely something that a 3rd party, a verified BarTender reseller, or our Professional Service Department could create for you.
Also, while we do not provide 3rd party applications, there are available SDK's provided in BarTender to be able to create applications to work with BarTender.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

If the layout of the labels are the same, just with different data then I have you thought about linking the label to simple product database or similar?
That way the users would open the label and then could be asked to scan the barcode which then picks up the product information from the database.
You can even go further than that where you have identically sized label but with different layouts as you can add multiple templates (designs) to the same label and, for example, if you had a distinguishing field in the database (ie a template1 or a template2 reference in a column), when the code is scanned BarTender would open the correct template in the label and populate that with the information and print it.

Peter,
I believe this would be my best course of action. I have the database linked along with a prompt to scan the barcode.
Am I going to need an outside program to convert the barcode to text in excel? Xabier mentioned an SDK for an application to work with Bartender. Or is this all going to be completed in the Script Editor?

Sorry not sure what you mean.
If the barcode number you are scanning is in the database and you link your label to this database and set the filter to search on that field then you shouldn't need anything else.
