"Save As" links label data entry forms
Hello - When using "Save As" to make copies of label formats the data entry forms remained linked. For example, a user will enter data via the data entry form on label A and print, then will open label B (the copy saved from label A) and the data will auto populate with the label A session data. I can copy and paste from the template to a new label and rebuild the data entry form but for obvious reasons I'd rather not go that route.
I am using the "Remember value for next time" option under data entry - I don't want to, but my hand is forced and that's a story for another thread.
Is this the intended behavior? Any way to just have the label be an independent copy other than the tedious solution I've mentioned?

That is because is what you are telling BarTender to do with the Remember Value .... setting and then Save As.
What are you trying to achieve? Are these fields meant to have fixed values in which case you should not connect them to Data Entry inputs but edit them on the Template view screens

Hi Peter - thanks for the reply.
Yes, but I just found it odd that it remembers the value from the label it was saved from not only on first open, but forever - both the labels become connected. Any changes made to the data entry form on either label will carry over between the two. In my experience when using Save As, I get an independent copy of a file - not a file that is still connected to the file it was saved from. So I'm trying to achieve a copy of a label that is fully independent of the label it was saved from.
As far as using the Remember value - I'd like this to be per session. For example I want to check the "Repeat data entry until canceled" in the print dialogue and have the data entry fields retained throughout the print session. I said my hand was forced to use the the "Remember value for next time" because this is the only way I've been to achieve this. Your fixed value comment is exactly what I've been saying to myself, I'm having a hard time understanding why the Remember value option persist through a print session. If a user wants a fixed value, why wouldn't they just edit them on Template view.

If a user wants a fixed value, why wouldn't they just edit them on Template view. >>> I have used this on a number of occasions where the same purchase order number, for example, is being used for a variety of products which are selected individually as other prompted/print time date is different for these and so it saves time for the operators
Going back to you first comment, that does sound strange and I have not seen that before. Have you setup any Global Data Sources or are you closing a file when using a different label and are Named data sources involved?

Yes, good point, I could see that use. My want of a session based save stems from us doing multiple batches of a label in one sitting, where only one or two fields change and the rest are the same for that session. I'm just surprised more don't want this feature.
No global data sources and no named data sources. I'm not 100 percent sure what you mean by closing a file when using a different label but the behavior persist regardless of the files being open together or one closed if that's what you mean.

Why do you need to save the label each time?
Are these Product type labels and you are saving them once for each item?

I'm not saving saving the label each time - I'm just updating data entry fields, printing and closing.
If you're asking why I want to use the save as function - I would like to have the option to create labels that are similar to others without starting fresh every time. For example I'll have a label for customer A that works for them but then customer B wants a very similar label with a few tweaks to it.

Figured I should mark this one as resolved (sort of) for the next person who runs into it.
This is the defined behavior of the software. There is currently no way to make an independent copy of a file - using Save As or making a copy in file explorer will forever link the files. There is a solution given to me by tech support (great group by the way). You'll need to change the Object name for each form field you want to be independent of the other file or files. This method does work but it's best to come up with a unique naming strategy to keep everything straight - especially if you will be making multiple copies of any of these files.
I hope to see this change in a future release but we'll see what happens.
