Do you plan on printing with BarTender directly to a printer, or are you wishing to export the design as a graphic/PDF "artwork" for use in another program for some sort of DTP process?

Are your multiple label variations based on variable data or variable layout design?

If variable data then you would connect the document to a database, linking objects with fields, for printing the variable data.  If varaible layout then you can either create multiple documents for each variation, or create multiple templates in the same document via the "Templates" tab in the BarTender "Page Setup" dialog.  Place the templates under a template selector in order to specify at print time which template layout is to be printed.

We don't currently show the quiet zones of barcodes in BarTender, although we hope to add such a feature in a future release.  You should therefore adhere to guidelines set out by the barcode symbology or label standard in use.

Thanks for the response. We will be printing directly from Bartender to a printer.

There is a variable background image for each label and variable data, some of which needs to be manually entered. It sounds like the best way is to create multiple 'Templates' (tabs down the bottom), which I have done in tests.

What do you mean by ' Place the templates under a template selector in order to specify at print time which template layout is to be printed.' Where is this specified? Is it in the template Page Setup or at the print stage? My client has not been able to choose which templates to print and all of them print each time.

    Thanks

The template selector can be added from the "Template" tab in the "File>Page Setup..." dialog of BarTender. If your customer is not able to see it probably means that their edition doesn't support this feature. Note that this feature is only available from the Automation edition on wards.

If your customer cannot use the template selector, they could instead use a single template with a variable image as background. They would need to relate the background image to a data base field instead of setting an embedded image. On this case the image object would need to be related to a database field where the file names are stored (note that if the database only contains the file names, you'll need to set the default path on the image object itself), and all the image files need to be on a folder accessible from BarTender.

    Regards.

How many templates can I have in one BarTender document?  How does the data entry work for the different templates -- my templates will sometimes prompt for different things.

    Thanks,

    Valerie

I don't really know if there is a limit in the amount of templates you can create for one BarTender document. I would suppose this would more be a performance and memory situation to have in mind (e.g. I wouldn't recommend creating more than 20 templates for the same BT document as it would affect performance). How many templates are you planning to create and what type of content will it contain? If there will be a lot of graphic information (e.g. Word processor objects, graphics), then be aware that the performance might be specially affected.

With regards to the template selector question, if the end result you're wishing to achieve is that only one template will be printed, then use only one template selector, and make its print condition based on a certain named data source. This named data source can then use some coding behing to decide which template to be selected depending on more than one different sources (such as based on two database fields, based on two other named data sources). You can achieve this by writing some VBScripting.
