Lengthy Delays When Opening Files
Until yesterday, our installation involved Bartender 8 UltraLight and associated printers. We wanted to install another printer, but were forced to purchase a new version for it to become useable.
Upon installing Bartender 10 Basic, performance was snappy. I was confident that there were no hiccups - until I tried opening an existing file. We have about 11,000 (eleven thousand) bartender documents inside a folder.
I noticed that Bartender would completely lock up when viewing this folder. Reinstalling the software did nothing to fix this. I removed most of the files in the folder, leaving about 100 in there. Performance was better, but there was still a slight delay upon opening the folder. As I placed more files in the folder, it took longer and longer to become useable. The delay to viewing the folder seemed to be proportional to the amount of files contained within it.
I also noticed that Bartender 8 did not prompt Windows 7 to generate previews of the file. Installing Bartender 10 allowed the generation of thumbnails. I think this is the key to the problem. I have a feeling the program is slowing itself due to rendering such a large volume of files. Is there a way to disable this functionality?
As a stopgap, I have cut up the files into alphabetised folders, but the jarring delays in the more popular folders are still an inconvenience. Coming from Bartender 8, this 'upgrade' seems good, but is a step backward in this particular aspect.
UPDATE: 1) In Windows Explorer, Folder Options -> View -> "Always Show Icons, Never Thumbnails" does not fix issue. 2) In Bartender 10, View -> Document Options -> Preview -> "None" does not fix issue

This is amazing. Finally someone else I can tell this issue with. I didn't know if it was just my PC or what. We, similarly, have files saved in large folders on our server. BarTender 9.4 appears to handle these folder views fine. However, my copy of 10.0 lags considerably when I'm trying to do a Save As for example. I've also seen similar behavior when just trying to browse my server folders for a datafile using the database connection wizard. I'm scared to death to upgrade some of my heavy users to 10.0 because of this. 0 -
I've noticed that there seems to be a baseline delay when clicking Open. Depending on the folder the program has defaulted to, having additional bartender documents stored just increases that delay. Having to walk users through my work-around solution and deal with the delays of the program hasn't made me the most popular man on site.
I might give this software a go on another computer to see if the problem is remedied with faster hardware. I've also noted that anti-virus could also be a sticking point. The computer uses Microsoft Security Essentials.
When clicking Open or shifting to a larger Bartender document folder, have you noticed that another window quickly opens and closes on the taskbar, nRyder? It looks like Bartender is running a background script to achieve something.
Otherwise, I will be forced to download and try out Bartender 9.4. Hopefully there isn't an issue with registration keys (we purchased a copy of 10 just a few days ago).
UPDATE: 1) Tried on multiple computers with a variety of specs, does not fix issue 2) Disabled Microsoft Security Essentials, does not fix issue 3) Downgraded to Bartender 9.4, does not fix issue 4) Downgraded back to Bartender 8.01, issue resolved.
It seems that the upgrade to the newer interface of 9 and 10 causes grief for my systems. Bartender 8 Basic does fulfil our needs quite well, so there may be no need to use the newer versions. However, the license key does not work! How can I go about substituting out version 10 license key for an older license key?0 -
First off, make sure you are using v10.0 SR3 as we fixed/improved a few things in the file dialog recently.

It's possible to run into performance problems, under certain circumstances, when using network folders containing a large amount of files. This issue first came up back in v9.10, I think, when we first introduced the Librarian companion application. This new application required us to create our own file requester dialog as the standard Windows file requester cannot accommodate a link to the Librarian's virtual directory system. Unfortunately it seems that Microsoft does some undocumented caching of folders which greatly speeds performance, that our file dialog lacks, and thus the performance is not as good and is more noticeable in extreme situations. Over the following versions matters have been improved, so using the latest version/build that you can is recommended.
If the latest versions/builds, or the workarounds are not usable to you then as a last resort you could create a registry key value to force BarTender Suite to use standard Windows file requesters only, thus eliminating the problem entirely. The downside of course is that you also disable functionality, which makes life difficult to use Librarian to store files. Note that the is a computer wide setting.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Seagull Scientific\Librarian\File Dialog
Name = Use Windows Dialog
Type = REG_DWORD
Data = 0x00000001 (1)0 -
Hi, this may or may not be related but I had the same issue after installing version 10 and found that making sure the printers were utilizing bidirectional mode was what did it for us. 0 -
The registry change worked perfectly. Sorry, but SR3 did not alleviate this problem nearly enough. We have some very packed network folders.
We don't use librarian at the present time, so this registry change is okay. Now the file explorer opens in half a second rather than 15-45 seconds they were taking.
