    Hi Vered,

Thank you for reaching us via the BarTender Community Forums.

The error message you've referenced could indicate a user performing an action that would necessitate access to the SQL database and not having sufficient SQL permissions or being able to find said SQL database.

The BarTender System Database is required if you utilize Global Data Fields, the BarTender companion applications Librarian, History Explorer, and/or Reprint Console, if you use or share BarTender System Security settings through the System Database, or if you have enabled Print Job Logging.

You can read more about the BarTender System Database here: Understanding the BarTender System Database. Outside of these scenarios, you do not need to install SQL Server Express or set up the System Database.

The question would be: Are you currently using any of the features or apps mentioned above? If that is the case, then we could either stop using those features/apps or install the BarTender System Database.

Below you will find some documentation on setting up a System Database and Configuring User Permissions which I believe should prove useful in case you decide on using the BarTender System Database:

Hopefully, this information will be of use; and in case you are not using any of these features/apps, please feel free to reach us again and let us know.

I know this is an older post, but we are having the same issue and it is becoming more frequent.  Bartender is setup with a connection to a SQL database, the BT system database is not configured, hasn't been at any point and my understanding is that it shouldn't need to be.  It will work fine for a few days or even weeks and then the error appears. Restarting the BT Service clears the issue, but obviously that isn't something that can be done regularly because this halts the operation.

The below appears in the BT Administration Console.

The below is from Windows Event Viewer.

A SQL query has failed with the following error: Query failed.

Table: , Command: select top 1 CategoryID from StringResourceCategories ORDER BY CategoryID DESC; Inner Message: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified).

Any help would be much appreciated.
