Auto printing of label from COM port input
Hi, can anyone help me?
I'm afraid I don't know the official IT terminology for what I am trying to achieve, I'm sure it has a process name (please enlighten me!).
I wondered if anyone on this site can help steer me in the right direction on this query: -
I have BarTender driving an Intermec thermal transfer label printer.
I have an application where I need the printer to print the value that has been input on a COM port, instantly if possible, but a few mouse-clicks would be OK too.
I have successfully used BarTender to batch-print columns from a DB in the past, but this application requires the label to be printed for each individual instance to avoid any mix-up, and whilst the item we are labelling is in the hands of the operator. On this occasion, I cannot afford to record the details into a DB, then have BarTender print the DB data, there would be too much scope for error.
Very similar to the weighing-scales add-on option I have seen on BarTender, the operator is going to transmit an RF code from a hand-held transmitter,,I have an RF receiver connected as a virtual USB COM port on the PC. If I run a terminal program, such as Putty, monitoring the input on the COM port, every time a device is triggered, the RF address is printed on the screen. It is this address which I want to grab, convert to a QR code, then have BarTender print the barcode, which can then be applied to the device under test.
I have looked to see on BarTender if there is a 'print from com port serial text' type option, but alas there is not.
Your opinions and knowledge in this area would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Will

If the USB data is not been used for anything else then you could just connect it to a Data Entry form entry box and tick this option
You could use Integration Builder to capture the input via a serial port integration

Thank you Peter, the options in your 2nd screenshot look very promising, I'll give that a go tomorrow. Is the 'Integration Builder' a utility within BarTender?

Yes it is one of the companion applications that should install when you install BarTender. However, you must have either the Automation or Enterprise edition to be able to use it
