Licensing Fees....
From what I can see bartender is very cost effective if you would like to print hundreds of thousands of different labels on behalf of lots of clients from one server to one printer.
However if, like us, you need to install the bartender application onto each client site (due to confidentiality reasons) and have only a small volume of barcodes being printed, by a number of users, to a number of printers, the application appears to be extremely expensive!
Am I misunderstanding something here or is this correct?

Well, the most cost-effective choice when dealing with many users is the Automation edition of the software. Like you described, it is limited at that point by individual printers. How many different label printers would the organization need? 0 -

Dear all, we are looking to use bartender to help our clients create and print a variety of barcode labels for their files which are held around their offices. Unfortunately it appears that the bartender pricing structure is set up in such a way that it would be prohibitive in terms of cost.

Licensing is done by the printer. Any printer used will be put on the license server (Seagull monitoring app) but will drop back off after seven days of non-use. As long as printer use is infrequent you should be ok with some percentage of the total users you have in mind.
In my opinion this is far more flexible than buying an application "by the seat" which makes no money if that "seat" is not in use.0 -

We are currently using Bartender on an old Server 2003 and are about to upgrade to a Active/Passive clustered 2012 R2 set of virtual servers and a new version of the automation version of Bartender. Since the licensing for the automation version is user based, would this mean that we would only need a single 3 printer license (we only have 2 Zebras) and could install it to both of the clustered servers?

Hello,
We have 4 editions of BarTender; Basic, Professional, Automation, Enterprise Automation.
The first two are single-user simultaneous activation, meaning can only be activated on 1 PC at any given time, however these licenses are also unlimited printer licenses.
The two higher editions use different licensing; Unlimited users but are restricted to the amount of printers. This edition is a "Network" based license, meaning you need to have the "Seagull License Server" application installed some where on your network; this application monitors and regulates the printing from your BarTender clients.
The editions are all different in regard to what features they have available to them. Enterprise Automation has all the features of BarTender available. Automation has all features in Automation, and below. Professional has all features of Professional and below. Basic has the features of only Basic. Here is the section of our website that details the differences between the editions: http://www.seagullscientific.com/label-software/barcode-label-software-features.aspx.
@Chris_Legal
Do you have any network connectivity between each of these PC's? If you went with the Automation edition they do not need outgoing internet, they just need internal communication between each other. If this is not possible, and they are true stand-alone PC's, you would need the Professional/Basic edition. And as you've seen, and as I stated above, they are licensed for 1 simultaneous activation at any given time; I.E. a one user license.
@nciseman
The Seagull License Server can only be installed and activated on 1 machine at any given time, so your cluster would only have a single install of it. In regard to how your BarTender is used, well this is really at your discretion because you aren't restricted to the amount of users. If you are worried about how the printers will be shared, i'd recommend reading our white paper on the License Server for more clarification: http://www.seagullscientific.com/label-software/whitepapers/licensing-for-automation-editions-201406.pdf.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response, however it does bring up additional questions. The cluster is a high-availabily configuration, if we installed to only one server and that particular server failed, the license software would not be on the server that the system failed over to. I would think we would have to install it on all servers in the cluster, and if a server failed, the cluster would failover to a working server where the licensing server just simply picks up where it left off on the failed server. Not sure it can work this way based on your comment "The Seagull License Server can only be installed and activated on 1 machine at any given time". Do you mean that it is simply not legal or do you meant that this is not technically possible. Even though the other server in the cluster is passive, it is in a running state and alway ready to be failed over to (just no one is actually using it). I would appreciate some further advice here, surely someone else is running Bartender in a clustered environment. I suppose we could throw it on any old machine sitting around on the network, but I'd rather not babysit a single pc somewhere that was randomly chosen by us to be the licenser server, more preferable to have it on our production cluster.
Thank you.
