Why is there not clear instruction to fix 1401
I had to replace a printer and now I have 2 users that are getting the 1401 error. Support here is less that helpful, more of a waste of time.
Can anyone give me useful instruction to get this corrected and get my production back on track?

Issues related to BarTender Licensing and Activations such as these will need to go through our regular support channels. If you have a Maintenance & Support agreement active with us, then you can reach us via web-form, chat, or phone. If not, we still have some regular support channels available to you, such as the web-form.

Hey there,
The 1401 error usually indicates a problem with the ink cartridge. Here are some steps to try:
- Ensure you’re using the correct ink cartridges for your printer model.
- Turn off the printer, remove the cartridges, and reinstall them carefully.
- Clean the gold contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer with a soft cloth.
- Turn off the printer, unplug it, wait a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
- Check for any firmware updates for your printer and install them if available.

BarTender error 1401 means you have tried to print to more devices than your software is licenced to use. I cannot see how changing/cleaning/resetting the ink cartridge can have any impact on this unless you dont print for seven days after which time the printer list will have refreshed with printers dropping off the list after they have not been used for 7 days

- I would rather know specifically how to resolve 1401 without having to contact support.
- The BarTender Knowledge Base has no clear instructions on how to fix and more importantly, how to prevent going forward.

2. You can't unless you wait 7 days for the incorrectly used printer to drop of the licenced list. You have purchased a product that is licenced to printer to X printers but inadvertently printed to a printer you should not have done and when trying to print to the correct printer you are effectively trying to print to X + 1 printers meaning that you have exceeded your number of licenced devices and so cannot print to this +1 printer until the incorrect printer drops of the licenced printer list. If you contact support (1.) then they MAY be able to assist with this but possibly not every time.
3. Make sure users cannot print to printers they should not is the simple answer to this and one way to achieve this would be to, in Administration Console and Printer Setup and use the Prevent All option in the drivers
You could also look at creating Printer Pools in the Licencing Licence Setup option and create a blocked printer list with all the drivers not to be used with BarTender.
For networked printers make sure that all the computers link to the same single network device and are not installed locally say set to the IP address as BarTender may not be able to tell that printer configured this way are in fact the same device.
Sometimes for USB devices this can be more problematic as the Windows PC could install the printer again connected to a different USB port or with say the Windows default device driver for the printer rather than the one you wish to use (ie a Zebra ZDesigner driver rather than Seagull Zebra driver)
