An error occurred when sending commands to program
Hi there,
our BarTender version is Automation 2016 R7, it is installed on 3 desktops which are checking licences using Seagull Licence Server which runs on one of the desktops as a service. SLS runs on Win7 / 64 bit. No internet connection.
The problem is, that on this "main" computer, every first launch of BarTender throws an error message "an error occurred when sending commands to program". Second launch is without problems. If I close the app and lanuch it again, error occurres. Following launch is OK again.
It seems that if I stop running SLS, the problem dissapears and every launch is smooth.
According to Google, the same error message occurs by some Office products (Word, Excel) and is related to DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange). Unfortunately, solutions are Office related.
Please, any idea, how to fix it?
Regards
Jakub

Could you move Licence Server to another computer or ideally a server?

Rather not.
It would be possible, but quite complicated for various reasons. I would rather try to fix current computer, if possible. .

You could try removing and reinstalling the full BarTender application on that PC including Licence Server and see what that does. I would suggest you also install R8 on the PC rather than R7 too. When uninstalling you will be asked if you want to deactivate the licence, as you say you have no internet access on that PC I would suggest that you leave it activated otherwise you will need to use a browser on another device to first deactivate and then reactivate it again.
When you install BarTender you can configure it to run under a specific user account and I wonder if it is worth trying that when you re-install it. It sounds like the problem is occurring when BarTender Designer is trying to "talk" to Licence Server and maybe it is a rights issue. You could also try adjusting the account that the Licence Server Service is using (default is the Local System account).
Not sure if these will help or not, but I would suggest you at least install the latest version first and try that and if it still isn't fixed then send an email direct to your regional BarTender Tech Support team as they may have some better pointers for you.

Thanx for you efforts, unfortunately we were not succesfull.
Anyway, maybe we are going to upgrade to BT 2019 Enterprise, because we want to integrate BT with SAP and make some automated printing. So it is possible that we will have to reorganise the whole workflow and hardware etc.
Therefore I will leave this issue as it is until we know more about our new workflow.
Thanx again for your help.
