Hello,

My company has just changed label software to Bartender.

We have the Professional edition and it is installed on 2 workstations.

Is it possible to have the database and all of the labels we create stored on the companys central file server?

If so how do i go about this please?

(I am a total beginner with BarTender so please dont be afraid to tell me how to suck eggs)

If you're talking about data pulled from an external file (as opposed to the BarTender System Database, which isn't available in Pro I don't think), then yes. As well as your label files. They are all treated like standard windows files and can be stored whereever you like.

So you cant have a database with the Pro version?

But yes id literally just like to have all the labels we created live on the file server so

A) both workstations look at the same data centrally and

B )They are included in the companies nightly backup

Where in the software to i set the paths to the shared folder on the server?

Thankyou

Connecting a database to your documents for printing variable data is indeed supported in the Professional edition.  The database can be located locally or on a network share if you prefer.  Likewise, BarTender documents can be stored locally or on a network share.

Default file/folder locations can be specified in BarTender via the "Administer>Folder and file locations setup" menu item.

nRyder mentioned that the BarTender System Database isn't supported by the Professional edition, which is correct, but this is a completely different thing to a database that contains the data that you wish to print on labels.  The BarTender System Database is a specific enterprise feature that isn't something you need to worry about for your particular implementation.

Thankyou.

Is the database that id need created when Bartender is installed on the Workstations and i just copy it over to the share or do i need to create it to put it on the network share?

You seem confused again

there are two different databases you are mentioning.

1. BarTender System Database --> this isn't supported in your edition, but would normally be installed with Bartender.  It would create a SQL database somewhere you specify to hold print jobs along with some other funcitons.

2. A Database that is directly connected to a label.  BarTender will not build or create this for you.  It can be an excel file with a list of records that you want printed out and the label is set up so that the informaiton printed is tied to the fields in the excel file.  It can also be a SQL table or pretty much any other type of database.  If you are printing one label from two different machines, they should both be able to access the location of the database you are trying to connect to.

Note that the BarTender System Database is a database instance hosted on an SQL Server used by the Automation editions of BarTender as a data repository for storing logged print jobs, application messages, security information, and version controlled resources.  It is not something that you need to use or worry about.

As mentioned before.  Your database, be it Excel, Access, text file, or whatever else, can be stored either on a local drive or a network share as you wish.
