It you don't wish to use the BarTender System Database, and its related functionality, then you don't need to run the BarTender System Database setup wizard to either create a BarTender database instance on an existing SQL Server, or to do this on a freshly installed SQL Server Express edition.  This feature is entirely optional.

    Hi

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this post - I too have a Bartender 2016 installation question.

I am upgrading from (Commander) 9.2 - and my questions is: should I a) remove the existing Bartender software before installing the new version? or b) install the new version over the top of the existing version?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you can offer.

    Cheers

    Craig

CraigSeySTL: As of BarTender 2016 R2, my advice is that you remove the previous version first before installing the new software.

    Hello

I too am wondering how to skip installing SQL Server CE on client machines. The Install Shield Wizard for 2016 R3 says that installation is required, and does not give me the option to skip this step.

George: the SQL Server CE install is a required prerequisite of the BarTender software.  As the name suggests it is a compact edition of the database software that is used for BarTender's own internal functionality.  This has nothing to do with the SQL Server Express edition that may be optionally installed via the System Database setup wizard for the purpose of message and print job logging, security storage, and document repository.  That feature remains optional and is not installed as part of the main BarTender installation wizard.
