Drop-Down Data Entry For Database Prompts フォローする

Hi there

What I'd love would be database query prompts that can use different methods of data entry - specifically drop-down lists - just like in the 'More Data Source Options' available for fields prompted at print-time. Like, I suspect, a lot of other users, I use BarTender to print labels for a number of different products from the same label design, using a part number to look up variable fields (descriptions, sizes, barcodes etc.) from a database. It would be great to be able to present the operator with a list of those part numbers to choose from rather than expect them to type it in blind.

If the same options that are available for print-time input could be applied to database prompts too, that would be grand (although that itself could be improved by telling it where to find a list of possible values, e.g. by pointing it towards the right column in the database, rather than by defining a separate list). Or possibly even better would be to be able to pick the database lookup from the main prompt dialogue instead if its own little one, and update the displayed looked-up variables along with it. Know what I mean?

I'm aware of the possibility of using VBScript (as per both this forum entry and this one), but I'd feel a lot more comfortable if it was built into the program and not relaying on my shaky coding skills, even with such guidance. Plus I've got several dozen different label files and updating all of them with appropriate code (since at present they can't share a common VBScript file), then testing them and making the inevitable corrections, is, frankly, not going to happen.

Cheers

Hi Jahrsper - Thanks for the feedback. The feature has been requested by numerous users in past, and I've added more requested count to the request to make it stand out. Yes, that would be lovely to expand record selection feature.

I really wish BarTender had this feature.

Prior to BarTender I used another label program called Teklynx LabelView. It was a very basic, low-end package with some - erm - interesting quirks. BarTender is vastly superior in every aspect... except one.

On LabelView I could set up a label that accepted database query input from a drop-down list rather than a plain text field; and what's more, it did it on the same input form as all the other fields, rather than a separate little query box beforehand like BarTender does. And as you picked your query variable from the list (e.g. part number), it changed any other fields that looked up their results from the database (e.g. product description) while you watched. I was amazed to discover that a program as sophisticated as BarTender didn't seem to have anything similar.

Unless I'm missing something? I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trawling through the help files trying to find something along these lines. It's by far the biggest frustration I have with BarTender, and the single issue that stops it from being as useful to our business as it should be.

I would like to add my vote for this feature as well.  And expand the request from the query prompts to also include the data enrty objects on the 'Data Entry Form'.

Thanks

I'll add my name to this.

We want to use "Vanilla" bartender functionality as much as possible, and not have to deal with any custom development to send data to the label so we'd definitely like a more robust database query prompt system.

Include me on the list. Our 9 year old Label Matrix is by far superior in handling drop down lists and using selected data for accessing other / more databases. It would be very convenient if BarTender would support this feature without the use of Visual Basic.

Its been 2 years now...

Our main issue is that if I want to print 212920 I will have to scroll down to it since I can not search nor type it directly.

Any solutions to this issue yet?

Never mind, I solved ti by using the query as explained in those videos: http://forums.seagullscientific.com/index.php?/topic/4240-drop-down-list-to-source-data-from-database/

Yay! Can you give us a bit of insight into how this feature works now?

Thanks.
