hi

i have been charged with looking after our bartender/seagull system while the usual culprit is on his holidays. I have received an email saying : Maximum printer count exceeded.

I have been onto the SLS but can;t seem to release any of the existing printers. I have read the FAQ's section and found the following.....

What happens if I exceed my printer license?

A : It can sometime be easy to exceed your maximum allowable printer license count for legitimate reasons. A 30-day grace period is automatically initiated any time you use more printers than your printer license count allows. The main console screen of the Seagull License Server (SLS) will display a message that you have 30 days to correct the problem. In addition, if the Alert Setup option has been properly configured (which is strongly recommended), an email message will be sent out notifying an IT manager (or other target) of the license violation. Follow up emails will be sent once per day until the issue is resolved.

During the 30-day Printer-Limit-Exceeded Grace Period (or until you resolve your problem), SLS will temporarily allow for double the normally-allowed number of printers, ensuring that you will not lose productivity during the overage

and i've also read the manual but still no joy. Can anyone tell me what i need to do to avoid the software becoming unusable.

Thanks

Since
BT v9.3, there has been implement a change in how the printer licensing works:

  • Prior to v9.3, printing to a printer which was exceeding the license usage was immediately denied. This is no longer the case. Whenever printing to a printer which has exceeded the license usage, you will now get a 30 day grace period", during which you can continue printing to this printer until you get your License Server licenses upgraded. You can print to up to double the number of printers your license is licensed for. If you own a 3 printer license, thanks to this feature you will be able to print up to 6 printers temporarily.
  • Thanks to this 30 day grace period feature, manually deleting printers in License Server is no longer needed. We've therefore get rid of this feature.
  • The printer usage is now being counted for 7 days, rather than each 24 hours. However, this property, combined with the new 30 day printer-limit grace period is a much more flexible licensing approach than we previously had.

Further information can be found on our White Paper:

http://www.bartenderbarcodesoftware.com/label-software/whitepapers/licensing-for-bartender's-automation-editions(english).pdf

If you're often receiving this error message "Maximum printer count exceeded", this is probably because you're printing to more printers than what your BT license is licensed for. You would therefore need to purchase a printer add-on for your license.

If you're running under a Terminal Services / Citrix environment, make sure to read the below White Paper (and apply the Seagull License Server Remote Assistant component):

http://www.bartenderbarcodesoftware.com/label-software/whitepapers/Using-BarTender-with-Remote-Desktop-Services-and-Citrix-XenApp.pdf

Finally, if you're running under a normal Windows networked environment and you're getting duplicate entries in License Server for the same physical printer, make sure to install the printer instances in a consistent way. (e.g. always point the printer driver to make use of the TCP/IP port the printer uses, or share the printer and always make reference to the printer by using its UNC name).

I also have this problem. My printers are duplicated ( 3 -> 6) when I change the ip address of the printers. Is there a way to remove those unused printers from license server?

Regards,

Steve

With what frequency do you change the IP address of the printers? Are you using DHCP?

If you've a BT version equal or higher than v9.3, my above post applies as to how SLS will behave.

I also have this problem. My printers are duplicated,  We have Bartender 10

I do not need more licenses, I only need to delete those duplicated

What does this mean? " The printer usage is now being counted for 7 days, rather than each 24 hours. However, this property, combined with the new 30 day printer-limit grace period is a much more flexible licensing approach than we previously had" Can you please explain deeply, since this is the first time I work with Bartender.

I was told that in previous versions there was a way to manually delete printers.

Versions prior to v9.3 allowed you to manually remove printers from the used printers list, but the flip side of this is that a manual intervention was needed to rescue the situation when the printer license was exceeded.  Now from v9.3 onwards we allow you to exceed the license by double the amount for a period of 30 days.  However, if you no longer print to one of these counted printers (presuming that it is now out of service) it will be removed automatically after a period of seven days of inactivity.  Therefore, the situation of changed IP address shouldn't affect printing as the grace period takes care of it silently for you, unless of course the frequency of changing the printer's IP is too great, which in any account would be a bit silly and unlikely.

The white paper explains all this in great detail so be sure to read it:

We recently upgraded to version 10 and have a 3-printer license.  When we upgraded, the Seagull License Server 30-day grace period started, because we had some test printers configured in multiple ways and it saw the duplicates as different printers.  We are attempting to remove a production printer from our environment and replace it with a new unit.  However, we can't see a way to remove it and immediately enable the new one.  I read through the documents and don't see a way to "remove" the old printer.  So it feels like a Catch-22 situation: I can't remove the old printer, because I can't add the new printer.  And I can't add the new printer, because I can't uninstall the old one.  I can't wait 7 days without a production printer available in that area of the company.  Help!

In BarTender v10 manual removal of printers is no longer allowed (thanks to the different grace periods and printer exceeding features we introduced). Please contact tech-support at:

That's the only way - please wait.

However if you're printing to only licensed number of printers and have legitimate reason to restore printer count, please contact to support in your region.

Hello,

This is a problem at my company as well,  Only it is not because I am changing the computers and creating duplicates.

The problem we are having is the users will automatically print to the wrong printer at least once a day.  So in that takes up a license.

Then they will print to the licensed printer.  Now they have taken up two licenses.

My Questions:  Is there a way to create a list of printers or printer names that we can add to the License server,  So that the users will not be able to print to the wrong printer?

mcheve01: Alas this is a feature that we don't currently support.  We are aware of the need though, and will look to implement something along these lines in a future release.

To add another gripe, a "printer" according to Bartender is not an actual printer, based on my experience.  It is a unique name at a unique address.  Change the name: new printer.  Change the address: new printer.

If four printers print to the same physical device, but each computer has a different name for the same IP address, it is four printers.  Likewise, if one printer has several aliases (using default settings for different programs) to the same address, they are seperate printers.  Also, if the exact same name changes IP addresses, it is an additional printer.

Can't the system recognize the MAC address of IP devices to find out how many physical printers are being used?  I have two computers that print to four different label printers plus one laster.  One is dedicated to UPS and not licensed.  One printer is also rarely used.  In fact that label printer OR the laser gets used maybe once a week.  So really, I am only printing to two label printers on a common basis.  Yet because of the issues listed above, I hit seven today and I now have to wait a week, becuase six, SIX!, licenses were used for two physical printers from one workstation today.

This needs to get solved.

Seven listed, only four real devices: Zebra S4M, Eltron 2844, Samsung Laser, Zebra GX420

How to fix this?  Waiting a week is a lousy solution.  Reinstall license server?
