New To Barcodes And Looking For Advice フォローする

Hi everyone,

I'm new to barcodes and am currently trialling Bartender.

I want to create approx 3000 barcodes for inventory control and also for our POS but only internally, so we don't need GS1 etc. I was thinking the code 128 version might suit us as it seems pretty flexible, I'll need BT to connect to our database or excel file to create the codes.

I want to keep the flexibilty of being able to change our product codes in the future without changing the barcode so i figured I should probably use a seperate serial number, has anyone any experience of this type of scenario, if so how did you implement it and what serial format did you use, no of digits, where to start etc etc.

Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.

Do you want to create labels which has a Code128 barcode, which has product code and serial number?

With BarTender, you can have 2 data sources (product code and serial no.) in a barcode.

ex:

when product code is "CA001" and serial no. is "00046", you could create like

1st data souce: "CA001" (derived from database)

2nd data source:  "-"

3rd data source: "00046" (serialization enabled)

connected data sources like

CA001-00046

Code128 is a very good choice since..

- It can encode characters, numbers and symbols

- It can be read by most of scanners without additional configuration

- It doesn't take much space

- It has integrated check digit to reduce decode error

I would go with Code128 for new 1D barcode project too.

Hi,

I would like to know more about the QR 2D barcode data source portion, how do I input more than 1 record from the database link to the 2D barcode and once i do a scanning to the 2D barcode, it can display the scan result with 2 records?

Hi CWS, if you meant 2 records(2 rows) of table, then there's nothing you can do - one label template can be related to only one database record.

You need to connect the 2 record data within database using SQL's view etc.

If you meant 2 columns of the same table,(such as product code and serial no) then do the same as code 128's case like attached.

This may be a dumb question but from what I read, I understand that a code 128 barcode has an automatic check digit.  Is that correct?

Hi Martin,

Yes it does.

That's many people get confused as usually barcode reader never show check digit of Code128.

The check digit is a Modulo 103 check digit added at the bottom of data. It is not shown on human readable by standard. The checksum is purely used to prevent misreading in between symbology and doesn't appear in data stream - just like QR code or DataMatrix.

Hi, when you want to print number of different design labels, you can simply create several different document and save them to a folder.

If print operator doesn't want to use BarTender window to print, you can use Print Station coming with BarTender. Print station gives you simple click to print solution for different labels.

If you want to modify product name, product code etc on the same layout, you can use database connection and / or data entry form. see this movie below.

If I'm completely off the point, I recommend for you to post new topic with some more detail, or contact to support.
