thought I have been using barcodes in a laboratory for sample tracking for 10 years I have not had to do much to the system in place.  Now I have switched to a new lab and am finding myself a newbie trying to set up a system I don't understand.  I understand the whole use novel numbers for each sample and how to make batch barcodes but now I need to set up a system that can scan an existing barcode and print out a replacement  so that I can split samples.  I have BarTender and though all my samples are currently in Excel I can switch to MySQL or Access if needed, and we have Zebra GX430 printers.  I just need pointed in the direction of some material that will explain how to do this. it seemed like a simple enough when I took it on but I'm not finding any useful YouTubes or forum posts, probably because I don't know what search terms to use.

Hi Coolgenes,

Do you need to duplicate old printed barcode label?

One idea is create a BarTender document with Data entry form. Print the document opens data entry, then you scan the barcode to entry the barcode value, then print using that value.

For data entry form, see below.

Another thought is read all required barcodes into Excel etc (most of Barcode scanner has such capability using virtual keyboard wedge etc), then using that database, print barcode labels from BarTender.

For print database value, see below.

Hope that helps!

thanks Shotaro I, I like your first suggestion, that may be a quick fix for now.  I also started watching the training video (http://www.seagullscientific.com/label-software/training-video-(data-entry-at-print-time).aspx) which is kind of in line with the system I would like to eventually have for sample tracking in the lab.  Is there a chapter or two that would cover the same topic that would step me through the process and go more in depth on some of the topics brought up in the video?  Thanks
