creating discrete serial number labels at print time 关注

I am using a Datamax E4205 to print a small bar coded serial number at a repair lab. How do I simply enter data without needing complicated templates etc. I should be able to set up the label and scan or enter data via a keyboard, a 12 digit number.

In addition, the template will not allow me to create a work page the size of the label which is 1.3" x .4". Does this further complicate the issue?

You page should be the width of the label plus backing with the height being the height of the label without the inter label gap. You should be able to set the label up 1.3 x.4 (approx 33 x10mm) . Are the settings greyed out and so you cannot access User Defined Size label in which case that could be a permissions issue.

Do all you need to do is scan/enter a number and just reprint it or are you doing something else as well?

Peter,

The label size, according to the spec, is 35mm x11mm. I cannot answer the User Defined Size question right now. I am not in the proximity of the machine.

I have repaired product that has missing or unreadable serial numbers that are bar coded, and I need to replace them. So the data could be entered via keyboard or a bar code reader gun.

Okay.

The simplest way to create this would be:

  • Create the label to the correct size using the User Defined page size option
  • Add the barcode onto the label, making sure it is not too close to the edge of the label (barcodes have "quiet zones" around them that are needed so the scanners can tell when the codes start and finish)
  • Assuming you only ever need one copy of the label, go to the File>Print screen and press the button to the right of the Copies box
  • Change the source to Get Quantity from Data Source (you can change the options by clicking on Data Source on the left hand column of the screen but there is no need to do this in this instance unless you want multiple copies of each label).
  • Press Ok to return the Print Screen and you may want to click on the Options tab halfway down the screen and enable the "Repeat Data Entry until Cancelled option" so that the screen we are about to set up below is displayed again after you have printed a label ready for the next selection to be scanned/entered. Once done click Close
  • At the bottom of the screen press the Form 1 tab
  • You can configure this new screen to allow you to enter print time data into a set field. To do this lick on the Data Entry Control dropdown and select Text Input Box.
  • Click and place the box on the screen and then right click on it to go into the Properties. From the Text Label option on the left amend the box contents on the right to something more appropriate such as Scan/Enter barcode number and then click on the Linked Data Source option on the left
  • On the new screen, on the right hand side click on the Data Source you want to use, which if this were a new label and you have not amended any default data will be the 12345678 under the Barcode 1 Template Data Sources list
  • Click Close and the the Tempate 1 tab and then save the label.

At print time now, when the operators press print they will be presented with just the Data Entry box in which to scan/enter the barcode. You may need to test this, but I expect if you scan the barcode twice the first scan will populate the data entry field and then move the cursor onto the Print button and the second scan will force the print button to be "pressed" printing the label.

For ease I would suggest you may want to use the Print Station application so the users cannot access the Designer program and just open the label when they want to print at the start of the day and the prompt/user entry screen will stay open until as an when required. If they are only using one printer you can skip the Printer selection screen by clicking on the Spanner and Admin Setup > General tab and set it to Immediately Print.

I hope this helps
