Printing of Label outside company network
Hello,
I have a tricky scenario to print bartender label to a printer that is not connected to company network. Here is a small background of what we are trying to achieve:
We have installed bartender enterprise edition in our central server that is connected to company network. The Central instance can communicate to the Printers that are connected in network. We send a text file to the central server and use commander script to listen to the file and send a print to the respective printer (The printer name is provided in the file). The label gets printed to the network printers with no issues.
Now, the tricky part is, one of our facility do not have company network and they connect using VPN. We need to send the Bartender Label print from the Central Server to the Printer that is not connected to company network.
Is there a way to do this?
I'd greatly appreciate your inputs.
Best Regards,
Bala

Hi Bala,
As long as there is that VPN network connection between the central server and the satellite facility you should be able to install/connect a printer driver to a printer in that satellite facility and print to it from BarTender like you do for any other printer.

We have done this in the past by connecting the desired printer via USB to a Laptop/PC that connects via VPN and sharing the printer to allow it to be seen on our network, obviously the printer will only be accessible while the Laptop/PC is connected via VPN
It's not an ideal solution but has worked for us in the past,

Thank you for your comments!
I tried sharing the printer connected via USB to a laptop. It worked fine when the Laptop was connected to company network. But, when i connected it via VPN, the USB printer was not visible in the network. I was under the impression that this solution may not work. Since you say that it worked in VPN, Could it be due to some Security Firewall settings??
Also, is there any other alternate solution for this problem?
Best Regards.

BarTender needs to be able to connect to a printer driver of some sort that is able to make print code that the printer will recognize. From there that printer driver needs to have a way to deliver that print code file to the printer.
As far as not seeing the printer across the VPN I would suspect that there is some sort of network security policy blocking the connection, but not being a network admin I'm not sure what exactly to look for.

Thank you James! I will check with the Network people to figure this out.

Another option would be to print the label from the print portal (bartender 2016) using the 'printer is connected to my computer option' on the laptop that is connected via VPN for this you already need a printer installed on the server that uses the same driver,
Once you have shared the printer are you then installing it by the shared name onto the bartender server? if so how are you referencing the printer Via IP or Hostname?

Thanks Seb!
I referenced the USB printer via the Hostname. (\\<computername>\<printername>)
