    Hello Greg,

Thank you for reaching us via our Community Forums.

When creating a GS1-128 barcode for a GTIN-14 in BarTender, it's important to include the appropriate Application Identifiers and follow the GS1 encoding rules. You mentioned that BarTender is only allowing you to create a GS1-128 using a 13-digit GTIN, but you need to use a 14-digit GTIN-14. Could you share some screenshots of your barcode and the steps you took when creating it so we can check it?

    Thank you.

I wonder if it could be this that with a 01 or 02 application identifier BarTender will calculate the check digit automatically.  If the data includes this then you will need to use the Transforms>Truncation to discard one character from the right so BarTender can calculate it and add it back on.

Here are our GS-128 requirements.  We need to drop the check digits, since they have to match our case and SKU UPC codes for our customer.  With another label software, I'm able use our own check digit.  With the Bartender's wizard, it does not allow me to uncheck the check digit box.

Being in the UK I dont often come across UPCA symbols but they still follow the same rules as an EAN-13 when using them with AI's 01 and 02 in a GS1-128 symbol.

This means that the number must be in GTIN-14 format, ie 14 digits long and to convert a GTIN-12 (or UPC-A) symbol to GTIN-14 you must pad the UPCA with two leading zeroes and so for example 012345678905 would become 00012345678905.

However as mentioned above to make sure that the symbol matches the GS1 specification, BarTender will automatically calculate the check digit and so the data used must either have the check digit removed (as per the image below) or else be the full 14 digits but with the Transforms>Discard Characters to right set to 1

As long as your UPCA codes are correct using the right check digit algorithm/calculation then if you follow then there should not be an issue. If they dont then you will not be able to use AI's 01 or 02 and would need to use a different AI such as the 91-99 for Company Internal Information
