Using Print Portal OneDriver
Overview
OneDriver is a feature introduced in BarTender 11.4 that streamlines the printer setup process for environments where printing is done through Print Portal running on a central server with printers connected to various client machines.

Information
Despite the name, OneDriver is not actually a driver; rather, it is a server-side print code generator that removes the need to duplicate driver installations on your BarTender server for printers installed on your client machines.
When you try to print to a supported printer that is not installed on the server, OneDriver automatically detects the printer model you are trying to print to, generates the appropriate print code for that printer, and then sends this print code to the client-side printer. However, this means that OneDriver is not a complete substitute for the printer driver. You will still need to install the printer on that client machine. OneDriver aims to make adding new printers to Print Portal with a decentralized printer setup easier. Without OneDriver, new printers must be installed both on the client machine as well as the BarTender server. For example, see the flow chart below:
- The above setup would have previously required each printer to be installed on both the client machine as well as on the Print Portal Server for the Print Operator to gain access to them.
- With OneDriver, it is no longer necessary to install printer drivers on the Print Portal server, cutting installation costs in half.
- As the number of printers grows and your BarTender environment is distributed between several physical locations, this leads to significant maintenance savings.
Installing OneDriver
OneDriver is included with the BarTender on-prem installer. However, it is not installed by default. In order to have OneDriver installed alongside BarTender, you will need to follow the steps below:
- Select Specify advanced installation options and click Next.
- Choose BarTender with Print Portal. You must choose this option even if you do not intend to use Print Portal, as OneDriver is packaged with It.
- If you previously had Print Portal installed, you will need to enter the password for your existing IIS_WEBPRINT account. If you've forgotten your password, see the Updating Print Portal section of Updating to BarTender 11.4 for instructions on resetting it.
- Click Install and wait for the installation to finish.
Keep in mind that while Print Portal usage is restricted to Enterprise editions, OneDriver is not limited in the same way and can be used regardless of your BarTender edition.
Using OneDriver
OneDriver is designed to work transparently in the background without the need for user interaction. This means that there are no configurations or UI elements for OneDriver. Once it is installed on your server, it should allow you to print to client printers automatically.
Once OneDriver has been installed, it will appear in Windows under Printer Management. You can verify this by following these steps:
- Click on the search box located in the bottom left of the Windows taskbar and type in Print Management.
- Click on All Printers in the panel on the left within Print Management.
- You should now see OneDriver listed among your available printers.
